I work with many military families who are relocated here, as well as civilian contractors moving here to work at Fort Gordon. One of the biggest mistakes I see them make is only searching for homes in the Grovetown area.

I believe this is because people are searching online, and are unaware of commute times from different areas. I put together an area chart detailing travel times from some great neighborhoods to the base. 

For example, Evans and Martinez are nice areas with great restaurants and convenient shopping, plus there is a great price range of available homes. Riverwood Plantation is another good area, with three super schools right in the neighborhood. Just across the river is charming North Augusta. If you're interested in fishing and boating, you have the convenience of the river right there. Plus, if you have a spouse working in the medical community, it is just ten or fifteen minutes across the bridge into downtown Augusta and the medical facilities.

Graniteville and Sage Creek are other great areas to consider. You can really get a bang for your buck when buying there. Finally, Grovetown is just minutes from the base. If you want to pop home after PT for a shower, or for a quick bite at lunch, it is very convenient.
